Are My Parents The Only Ones?

You still young little lady but let me tell you this, If you date someone for their financial status then tell what it is that you feel for that individual ? is it love? I doubt it! However, you should not let anyone not even your parents to control your heart or your emotions. Yes you will not be with someone who doesn't have a life, but what happen if that individual is trying to be someone in life, trying to fulfill his dreams, working hard and putting passion in what his doing because one day he will reach his dreams. Question: Will you be with someone like this? or Will you be with someone who has tons of money and treat you like a toy? In other words, go for those who dream big and have goals, go for the good men no matter how bad his financial status is because in the end what is more valuable is the way he will treat you. "Every woman deserves a man who loves and respects her and every man deserves a woman who appreciate his efforts". Hope you take this in mind.

    Approved But No Work Permit?

I'm going to look for the other letters. So there is one than one receipt number? I've only been using one number so maybe that's why I see no updates. I will post here if a problem arises.

Hi there, On financial aid for us. Let me tell you what I did to attend a really good private institution. First, I applied to about 8 schools including State Univerisities, private colleges and community ones. Then waited until I got their finacial letter saying how much they awarded me for merit and other stuff. By far the private institution was the best deal for me. I suggest to all DREAMERS to apply to private schools. They award more merit based scholarships than any other schools. Then, I attended every single scholarship events this school had to see if I could earn extra scholarships. I also did research on the side on private and local scholarships including those coming from private foundations. I made sure most of them were renewable. Once I had my foot in the school, I was able to afford going for a year without a problem. But the second year was the tricky one. I had to go to the financial aid office and meet with the head of the department. I explained to her my situation and how I REALLY wanted to continue my education. She pulled up my transcript and of course that helped a lot so she said to fill out FAFSA in paper as if I were able to qualify and to hand it to her. She also asked for my parents income proof and of course we qualified. What this person did was pull funds from FAFSA after everyone had been granted with their money because what happens is that apparently once the semester passes the leftover funds are free to go to any student and FAFSA doesn't require them to report back per say. I heard this happens in state universities as well. I would suggest having the courage to go talk to the financial aid person and explain exactly what your situation is. You never know you might get lucky and have a really nice person like I did. On top of scholarships, "FAFSA" I also paid for my school from my own pocket. I had 2 jobs while in college during the weekends --- NO LIFE, LAB RAT over here. So I gave up partying for the most part .. yes sometimes I decided I needed a break.. and paid for a good chunk of my education. My parents also helped with a payment plan every year. You can set them up with the school or a private company. They charge like $60 for enrolling and split the payments during the school year. Summary - Going to college was not easy I had to SACRIFICE a lot including a social life some semesters. Do I regret it NO! - Apply to a ton of schools. - Look for scholarships, attend scholarship events - write awesome essays to get scholarshios - Get a job and save, keep the job during college - Get good grades - Meet with finacial aid and explain situation - Set up a payment plan - Work hard and finish no matter what! Anyways that is how I was able to graduate from an awesome school in a nut shell.

    Approved But No Work Permit?

So I got my deferred acceptance letter but not my work permit. I received my letter(I-797) not (I-797c) on Nov 27 and have been waiting for my permit since then. It's Jan 8 now should I keep on waiting or should something been done? I've gone online and did some research and it seems that most people got their permit along with the letter or 1-3 weeks after receiving the acceptance letter? Could someone give my any advice? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! Note: already took my bio metrics prior. received approval for deferred action nov 27. I'm just very confused Picture attachment

Are My Parents The Only Ones?

Ever since I started dating my parents always told me that i should be careful of who I date. I always argued with them (i was maybe a freshman in HS) that having a boyfriend did not mean i was gonna marry them blah blah. growing up.. they still tell me the same thing (repetition is their parenting style), and I agree with them. Now that i am older i understand that you do fall in love and so on and so on. However, their main point was that i should better myself. For example, they always told me that i should not date (shouldn't is a bit harsh.. isnt it?) someone who is also undocumented. They have engraved in my brain that we came to the united states to better our life, so why should i pursue someone that is on the same level as i am, and can't offer me any more than they can. I mean.. it kind of makes sense right? they chose to bring us here to better ourselves and it would be kind of redundant to not keep moving forward. any who.. im kind of stuck between both sides. the side they have taught me and the side where it's judgmental and unfair. what do you think? are my parents the only ones? forgot to add something very important... shouldnt date those who arennt betterinng themselves.

    College Application Help :) Thanks

You will - You have shown commitment and determination so far, and that goes a long way. Just don't wish to transfer to a University, or say 'I want...' for that matter... Instead, visualize it. See yourself in it. DO IT. Better yet, see yourself as an Eng Graduate!

Are My Parents The Only Ones?

I get what your parents are saying obviously they don't want you to date a cholo or a low life Let's just remember where we came from and in my opinion legal status doesn't matter you can fall in love with anyone I dates girls that are citizens and have better economic statuses then me honestly they didn't care about my legal status but I wasn't a low life and been illegal didn't stop me from making myself better I drove worked illegally I took risks I wasn't going to stand there doing nothing lol Anyways yes finding the right person at our age is hard especially with our situation we want the best for our future but love is mysterious and you fall in love with the person you least expect (even if he/she don't have papers lol) so we have to always find a way to improve our lifestyle even if there's no legal status the opportunities are right in front us we just have to work hard to get on top.

I lived there for a while... First I lived in the South Bronx (Crotona park, close to Southern Blvd and Boston Rd - about 5 mins from the zoo/Fordham), and then I lived by Woodlawn Cemetery, south from Yonkers. Also, when taking the scenic route, I used to drive down the Bx River Pkwy, on to Bruckner, and would cross into the city by the RFK bridge, and would get off on Harlem to take Park Ave south... See? New Yorker by heart son!

California does have the California Dream Act. which entitles an undocumented student to apply for and receive non-state funded scholarships for public colleges and universities. this 1st link is the link for the instructions for the California Dream Act app. http://www.csac.ca.gov/pubs/forms/grnt_frm/2013-14_california_dream_application_instructions.pdf 2nd link is for the application itself http://www.csac.ca.gov/pubs/forms/grnt_frm/2013-14_paper_dream_application.pdf 3rd link is for the worksheet http://www.csac.ca.gov/pubs/forms/grnt_frm/2013-14_dream_application_worksheet.pdf i dont know, where you applied for school, but it is worth a try to talk to the financial aid department and ask them what your options are and if the California Dream Act applies to community and junior colleges as well.
  22. 1 point
Didn't they pass the California Dream Act? I think in addition to in-state tuition, if you're low income you get financial aid. They have restrictions like you have to have graduated or attended a California High School for 3 years. I know it applies to all the public colleges and universities so maybe. I'm not 100% sure. Maybe ask an advisor. I also know that in New York the CUNY's offer financial aid to anyone as long as you qualify for it. Good luck
  23. 1 point
I'm not sure over there, but here it is a no. I went to the community college to request financial support and the dude there tried everything possible to get my sister and myself help, but you have to be a permanent resident at least to qualify. Good luck, there's nothing wrong with trying!

Are My Parents The Only Ones?

I personally, never let legal status be a factor in if I dated someone or not. I didnt encounter any one in the same situation as I, that I wanted to date. My boyfriend whom, Ive been with for about 4 years, is a US Citizen and when we met, I just wanted a fling, due to my legal status. He wanted something serious, but wasnt aware of my legal situation and thought I was pushing him away because i was married or something. I finally came clean and we have been in a relationship since. He always made it clear that my legal status, wasnt my fault and it isnt correct to be punished for your fathers sins. Also, my legal status doesnt define me as a person, he fell in love with me, for me, not for my situation. He's always had my back and now that I work and am going back to school, he continues to be supportive. I struck gold when I found him. I understand that we always want more, someone with a legal staus or plans, and theres nothing wrong with that, but you cant go against your heart. If you fall for someonw whos in the same boat as you, but just like you, wants to succeed and better themselves, whats wrong with giving it a try? Sometimes we need to put ourselves in the other shoes, would we want to be turned away from a meaningful relationship, just because of our status? To each their own, I dont judge because Im not perfect and I wish everyone the best.

Are My Parents The Only Ones?

well, I feel like when i started dating i was always scared to date someone who didnt have papers bc like what if he drove and we got pulled over? all that stuff was out of my hand. so like i kinda set a higher standard of where i wanted to be in the future and i dont date anyone who doesnt have papers. bc im scared. i dont want to be illegal forever. i dont expect the person i marry to help me get papers but maybe like in the future but it gives me like a security. but my parents never taught me that, they taught me to love someone who loves me for me.but i kinda just felt that way bc i saw couples who didnt have papers and they struggle and i never wanted to end up like that. so idk. i agree with them. but you should always go with what makes you happy! like i never told my boyfriend i didnt have papers till one of my cousins opened their big mouth. but like now that he knows he wants to help me but i dont want him to until we have been married for over 1 year bc i want to be sure that he knows its not all about that and i want him to make sure that he truly does want to help me. its tough but security in life will also be a big factor when it comes to the future. well to me it is at least.

some school will have private scholarships that you might be able to apply for. I know in CA, i was allowed to pay in state tuition before DACA because i attended and graduated from a CA high school. it all depends on what state you live in and what is available. the best thing to do is to talk to the financial aid department at the school your attend or want to attend.

    Applying for jobs?

http://forum.adreamact.com/topic/981-job-searching/ Take a look at the link above. I posted a few tips/hints on how applying in person and online might work. From personal experience, I noticed most good companies take the online route these days. I would think about where I want to work and go on the company website. Hope it helps.

    Applying for jobs?

Hi meltop80. Welcome to the forums. I did both, apply online and go in person. It really depends where you apply. Some places take online applications only and some have you print out the application and take it to the place you want to work. I learned from a manager from a local grocery store, that they usually like to hire people that apply online and that come back to the store and follow up on the progress of their online application. He told me it shows your interest in the job. Hope this helps.
