I don't think your status would affect your ability to buy a house. If you believe, you can afford the house and you get approved for a home-loan then go for it. I am sure there are no such law that stops someone from buying a house because they are not legally present in the US. From some stories that I've heard, if you purchase a house worth 500K and pay for it up front, you can apply for a green card. FYI, there are many investors from china who currently own lots of properties in Manhattan because they could afford it. And, I belive they came in the US with visitor visa or business visa.

From what I have read on other forms, you most probably are going to get the same msg telling you, it will take few more months to finalize your approval. It just means that your application was routed to the appropriate USCIS office so someone can look at it. I am guessing, either you just sent in your application or they just got a chance to look at your package. The copy of your GED should be enough. But, you can include a letter of completion just to be sure.

For someone who overstayed a visa, I think it will be hard to re-enter since they fall under the category of the ban even if they get approved for AP.
