Really Upset With New Employer

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, a while back I posted asking what to do about a new job I got offered and the fact that they would hire me with no papers and wait for my papers to be all set, but I could work meanwhile.

Now, I was totally upfront with them, absolutely truthful, and the person who was hiring said they really wanted me because of the qualities I had and said there would be no problem in paying me, because they would pay me in personal check while my papers were not ready. Well, I had to work 30 hours of internship, fine, I did. Now, the week after my internship ended, I was supposed to get paid, but then, the same person that hired me and said they would pay me in personal check, comes to me and says "So, as soon as you get ur stuff we will be able to process and pay you". I was shocked, I did not say anything at the time because there were other co-workers around, and this was private, between me and this person that hired me with the promise of a paycheck. I am so upset, I have been out of work for 2 weeks due to a hospital stay, I am still sick, my first day back is supposed to be tomorrow, and I have not seen a cent in more than a month. She was not truthful, and the worst part is that the employer himself, an Orthodontist, probably has no idea of what she has done to hire me, she promised something without consulting him, and he has probably no idea. I called to refuse the job, and she said that they would pay me in personal check. This was the only reason I took the job in the first place. I am terribly upset about this. What should I do?

Ahhhh, that's so frustrating. I'm sorry to hear that. Did you guys put anything in writing? First of all, don't stress. Just take the steps to figure it out. You've already been completely honest so keep being open and honest and bring up the agreement confidently and casually mentioning that was the plan you had settled on with her. Be positive and courteous but state the facts and don't present anything in question form, giving her an opportunity to tweak anything. If that doesn't go well, I would go to the employer and just present everything honestly and see if he would be willing to work that out with you. Put it in writing if you can!!! Good luck!

The agreement you made with the peron who hired you, Im assuming was verbal, nothing written. If thats the case, that is the reason she seems to be changing the original agreement. Im so sorry to hear that and know exactly how you feel because the same thing happened to me, I was promised a very large amount of $ after many years of work for an elderly person, I never got it in writing and later when I called, it wasnt given to me. Im sure you want to keep this job, but because of the agreement with this person and her not keeping her end of the bargain, things may get difficult. She may not have been authorized by the orthodontist to do such agreement. There are laws that protect the workers. If you try and work something out and she keeps in the same position, she may try and scare you with telling the orthodontist the "agreement" formed between you two. My opinion would be to go directly to the orthodontist, but unfortunately you do run the risk of losing the job becasue of the agreement with said person and depends how the orthodontist sees it. Good luck.

I just feel that due to my health situation I should quit this job. Maybe they will just write out a check for what I have worked and be done with it. I am not in a great position to look for another job, my health situation does not allow it for now. I feel like they are wasting my time an I am wasting theirs. And this eternal delay with the Vermont Center is killing everyone that is waiting. I am fortunately married to a great man who can support me for a couple months until I can get better and maybe the documentation will arrive. This just really sucks, if I knew this would happen I woould've never quit my other job. This is just terrible, to be promised something and not be given it.

Ugh, so sorry! Never ever do ANYTHING without it being in writing. I don't even nanny without signing a contract. I'm very relieved to know you have a good support system and I hope that whatever your health situation may be, it improves and you find an even better job when the timing is right! I'm still waiting for those lumber jack bums so I feel you!

Ugh I am so sorry this happened to you. I can see how this person thought it was convinent to hire you at the time and then switched the story. So this is what you could maybe do. Go talk to her and let her know exactly what you are going through and the fact that you had to leave a job to accept the job under the agreed conditions. If you were honest at first, I don't see why not approaching her with this would hurt. Plus she might realize that you truly need the money so she might be willing to work a deal with you.
