Rickyerique 2 Posted March 10, 2013 Does everyone's social starts with a one? Because I noticed that us citizen numbers start with a six?
JoseG 383 Posted March 10, 2013 Before June 25, 2011 Social Security Numbers were issued depending on the Area that you lived. The first three numbers of the SSN were called the Area Numbers. This number depended on the Zip Code in the mailing address provided when someone applied for an SSN. The Western States used to have the highest Area Numbers, which began with a 6. The numbers then decreased as you went farther East. The farthest States east have the lowest Area Numbers. For example, Pennsylvania and New Jersey numbers began with a 1, while other states like Maine and Vermont started with a 0. You must be from a western state that used to issue the Area numbers starting with the number 6, like in Arizona, California, Texas, Utah and New Mexico. The Social Security Administration no longer uses this system though. Since June 25, 2011, all Social Security Numbers are now issued at RANDOM. That means that the Area Number or the entire Social Security Number no longer means anything. Your Social Security Number can begin with any Area Number, including the Area Numbers that were previously not issued, like the 734-899, except Area Numbers that begin with 666 or 900-999.
