Best Credit Cards To Apply For After Daca

Recommended Posts

Random question:

When someone under DACA applies for credit, do we have to list both last names as it appears on the SSN card

and DL? Thanks.

Not necessarily -

I have used my first last name forever.

However, I always let the people gathering my information know that there are two last names in my card (and I go through the whole 'both families' last names history - if they were not aware of it)

You are not lying to anyone. You are just adapting to the American way of just using only your first last name. However, if you want, you can use both last names hyphenated...as in 'Pepito Perez Martinez' would be 'Pepito Perez-Martinez.'

It is up to you, although I suggest you use only one...it will make your life easier in the long run.

My 2 cents...

When i applied for the SSN the lady helping me said i had to use the name exactly as it appeared on the EAC for all paper work. That i would be able to drop the second last name once i went for a permanent resident card and if so i would have to make changes to the SSN later on. Since school i have always used only one last name. Maybe is just for government paper work. Not sure if its for credit card applications as well.

If u live close to a branch, it's a lot quicker if you go in. The whole transaction only took a few minutes for me. While you're there they will check to see if u qualify for any of their other cc before signing u up for the Secured one. Once u qualify (you find out in seconds) they just take a copy of your ID and SS card. Expect your card within 5 business days

Let's make this real because a lot of you are applying without having an income.

YOU MUST HAVE AN INCOME TO BE APPROVED FOR A CREDIT CARD.

WITHOUT A JOB YOU WILL BE DENIED.

ALSO!

Your credit score will decrease by 3 points each time you apply for a credit card, or any other service that checks your credit score. Such points will be back within 3 months.

I got denied immediately once I submitted my application for the Capital One newcomer's CC... sucks! I am going to open up my own bank accounts tomorrow at BOA so I'm going to see if I qualify for any credit cards.

I applied for the Capital one secured credit card in June and got denied, The letter i received states that  my credit report from the 3 agencies (Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union) is "missing or invalid."

Has anyone else gotten this same letter? or has anyone recently applied for the capital one secured credit card and has been approved??

I applied for the card the same day I opened the bank account. Should I wait a little longer and re-apply??

Thank  you in advance.

I can't wait to build my credithistory so I can qualify for a loan and help myself pay for college!!

Ok, I applied for the capital one secured mastercard and the first time it told me I wasn't approved. I applied again but this time using my full name as it appears in my SS card(First time I only used first and last name), and instead of telling me I was denied it told me my application had been received and I would get an answer in the mail.

Did any of you approved get an answer immediately?

The same thing happened to me. I received a letter 2 weeks later denying me the cc. The banker who helped me out said this usually doesn't happen- as in mostly everyone who applies for the secured credit card gets approved immediately. However, she's noticed that 2 other daca students who have tried to apply for the capital one cc have gotten the same letter that I got!

Start with a secured credit card, after six months you have a Fico score, you can then apply for unsecured credit cards. Usually for bank unsecured credit cards they require an applicant to be a Citizen or Permanent Resident of the US. I've recently applied for an American Express and got accepted with a $2,500 limit. Before applying for any form of credit it’s always a good thing to get a free credit report from all three credit bureaus (Transunion, Experian, and Equifax) and to check for any errors. When i started with the secured credit card, i was advised to only use 10-15% of your credit limit and to always pay before the due date. If you have a parent, sibling, or know someone with good credit, you can ask them to co-sign for you on credit applications, but it is usually seen as risky for them. What you can also do is "piggyback" on other people's credit by asking them to add you as an authorized user on their credit cards, but that can be risky because if they default on their debt, it can show up on your credit report. I'm not a credit guru, but I can definitely help.

How soon after receiving the social security number did everyone start applying for credit cards and did they get approved?

It should be ok to apply within a few weeks. I would apply for the basic credit cards first.
