A passport is not mandatory (but if you came in with a passport and it is stamped, I would) , per a news cast last night. If you read the instructions Form I-821D page 3 part 3. What Documents Do You Need to Provide to Prove Identity? and it states "Submit copies of any of the following" and it gives 7 choices a-g. It does not say all but the more you have the better they can identify you.

While it isn't completely required when you send the copies along with your application, you need a government issued identification when you get the appointment to do your biometrics. That will be in a few weeks, I recommend going to your closes country consulate and get a passport or temporary passport which can be given the very same day. Your other option is getting an Identification card depending where you were born. For my nationality an identification card takes half a year to process it and send it to the US.
