Francisco94 0 Posted May 9, 2013 Hey guys after what I experienced today, I decided to come to this site and start a discussion on a new topic for which I cannot find any answers online and I hope someone here can clarify for me. Anyways, I went down to the T-mobile store today hoping to get an upgrade at a discounted price. The sales representative asked for my social as they told me that they were required to run a credit check. I am 18 and a beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. After trying and trying, I was forced to leave without a phone because my social security failed to show any info, infact it errored out. This has lead me to believe that all the social secuity numbers provided to us DREAMERS are different than those given to US citizens. I've also been trying to add my social to different online sites like my own bank account and it still errors out. I'm just really frustrated and can't understand what is going on here. The social security card itself does have a stamp that says for work only so my best guess is that these numbers come with restrictions. Thanks for listening and have a great day! jjkayslay 15 Posted May 9, 2013 I am not sure if that is the case as there have been some dreamers taking credit cards out.
stolenlacs 37 Posted May 9, 2013 You might have a point but I have heard of people transferring their credit history from their ITIN numbers to their new social, the error might come from the social not having any history on it as in being brand new, how can they check your credit history if you have not used it? That might be the problem why dont youtry toput utilities to your name and new social, get a credit card under the new social start building your credit. 4 jjkayslay, cyanite, Francisco94 and 1 other reacted to this
JoseG 383 Posted May 9, 2013 The SSN numbers themselves are no different than a U.S. Citizen's. The problem is that our SSNs are NEW, so they aren't in all of the system's yet. You need to establish credit with your number so that it can be looked up. Your number isn't ran with the SSA for verification, it is ran with credit unions. By the time a U.S. Citizen uses his SSN, it has been issued for at least 15+ years. 2 Francisco94 and Heisenberg2 reacted to this

K.pineda0609 0 Posted July 25, 2015 I just went through the same thing at at&t but they clearly told me it was because my social security had restrictions... I feel like it's discrimination... I have credit cards and have had them for almost a year yet I can't have a phone??....
Osi_Land 0 Posted July 30, 2015 Make sure to tell them its a restricted social and they work with you. I have two credit cards, and also had a credit check done when I purchased my car. The car dealer asked for my social and I gave it to him and told him it was a work only social he said it was fine he just had to change something on the computer and voila it went through. I plan on buying a house next year and have been building my credit, I never transferred anything from my itin and my credit is very good a year after my first credit card. Good luck.
