Johnny1992 0 Posted December 30, 2013 Hello guys, i was wondering if we, the dreamers, are required to look to health care so we can file for the income tax. All i know if that we will not get any benefit from ObamaCare but i'm not sure if we are still required to get health insurance when filing for income tax or else we might get fined. I have no idea at all. If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks!
roadrunner11 167 Posted December 31, 2013 Hello I received a class about this from work and yes everyone is required to have health insurance. What will happen the first year is the government along with the IRS will fine you $300 if you fail to get insurance. The following year the fine will almost double so it will be bigger amount every year. As a DACA recipient you can apply to private insurance or get insurance through your employer (much cheaper and better insurance). Hope this helps. 1 adol reacted to this
Lunera 0 Posted January 1, 2014 This is a good question. I am worried about this too. I am in California and checked out coveredca.com/FAQs/ and saw this: "However, some individuals may be exempt from paying a penalty, including: people who would have to pay more than 8 percent of their income for health insurance people with incomes below the threshold required for filing taxes (in 2013, $9,750 for a single person and $27,100 for a married couple with two children) people who qualify for religious exemptions undocumented immigrants incarcerated individuals members of federally recognized American Indian tribes and Alaska Natives" I also gave a call to them (1800-300-1506) and they said that I did not qualify to get health care coverage and would not get fined when I filed taxes. I'm not sure if this is the same in all states. I suggest (if you live in Cali), you give them a call for your peace of mind. There will be a long wait period, but it's best to wait than to have to deal with an unexpected fine.
