itzel 336 Posted September 12, 2012 Cool post. Thanks, regarding the foreign birth certificate, do they mean the original birth certificate or the translated certified copy we have? Ill be bringing both in just in case and as soon as I get my work permit Ill be applying for a TX ID, just to make any type of paperwork go by easier... JoseG 383 Posted September 12, 2012 I'm not sure, it says an original document or certified copy so I think just the birth certificate will work. Hopefully it does because I forgot to take a copy of the translation -.- I'll take my passport and high school transcript since they are both accepted also, just in case. 1 lavidaloca reacted to this

Rawf 336 Posted September 19, 2012 Anyone know why it says "may be eligible"?
JoseG 383 Posted September 19, 2012 If you are granted Deferred Action and an EAD, you may be eligible for an SSN. To become eligible, you must bring in your EAD and proof of age and identity when you go to apply for the SSN.
pswa83 302 Posted September 19, 2012 i think it's because USCIS may not approve everything for an EAD but might approve them for DACA. Maybe?

To become eligible, you must bring in your EAD and proof of age and identity when you go to apply for the SSN. Everyone accepted will have all the proper identification to get a social security number. Still doesn't say why some may or may not qualify. i think it's because USCIS may not approve everything for an EAD but might approve them for DACA. Maybe? Not exactly sure, but once you get the EAD, you can apply for a SSN right away.. just take the EAD and passport.. sounds easy, but why they use the word "may" as if in some cases people won't qualify even after getting an EAD. As far as I know to work the EAD is not enough, you still need a SSN or no company will hire you.
JoseG 383 Posted September 20, 2012 Everyone accepted will have all the proper identification to get a social security number. Still doesn't say why some may or may not qualify. They need to see that you have the proper documentation, or else they would have told you to just bring in your EAD since it already has your photo and all of your information on it. The reason it says that you may be eligible is because they need to verify your identity on their own first. "We must independently verify the documentation you provide" They won't just go off of your EAD. If they can't verify your identity and age, you won't be eligible. pswa83 302 Posted September 20, 2012 it would be interesting to see if someone was granted DACA and did not get a EAD.
JoseG 383 Posted September 20, 2012 That might happen with some minors that didn't give a good explanation of why they need an EAD on their I-765WS.
HarikaTuzun 16 Posted September 20, 2012 That might happen with some minors that didn't give a good explanation of why they need an EAD on their I-765WS. That worries me a lot . I said that I needed to save up for college and I hope that's enough. Also, do you guys know if DACA recipients under 18 have to provide other documentation or maybe have their parents be legal? If you are from 16-31 years old, it's all the same.

Also, do you guys know if DACA recipients under 18 have to provide other documentation or maybe have their parents be legal? I would think that if they are under 18 and their parents have legal status that there would be some way for them to gain legal status through their parents instead of applying for DACA. and as for as being under 18 and having to show "other" documents, define "other"? i would think USCIS would let them know what other documentation they would want to see. But if they have all the other required documentation then i do not see why USCIS would ask for "other" documentation
23guy 1 Posted September 21, 2012 Does anyone know if there's a fee to get a s.s.n? And, How long does it take?
JoseG 383 Posted September 21, 2012 I don't know if there is a fee, but it shouldn't take more than 2 weeks for your card to arrive. The location you go to apply will get your number a few days after you apply. You can go back there and get the number from them if you need it sooner. Rawf 336 Posted September 22, 2012 The Social Security Administration does not charge for a Social Security card. http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/1120/~/cost-for-a-social-security-card
pswa83 302 Posted September 22, 2012 it takes between 7 - 10 days to get your SSN in the mail.
itzel 336 Posted September 22, 2012 Im not 100% sure but even after one applies for a SS card and it takes the few days to get to you via mail, I think they give you a receipt witht the SS number youll be using..so one can start applying for jobs...kind of like when you apply for an id or dl, they give you a temporary paper while yours gets in the mail. That is correct, while your card is being made and mailed you can go back to the SS Office and request your number. You can take that to the DMV and get your identification. I think it takes 4 days for the SS Office to have your number, I don't think they give it to you right away but I might be wrong.
JoseG 383 Posted September 23, 2012 Yeah, it will take a few days, 3 or 4 before they get the number.
