Hello, I'm a bit confused. Once you obtain your SS number you can get a license or do you get a permit ?

If you get a permit what would be the restrictions on it ?

once you obtain your SSN, you can apply for a DL. you have to take the written test and IF you pass, they will give you a permit. That permit will allow you to be able to drive WITH someone in the car with a DL. Having a permit though does NOT allow you to drive by yourself. IF you are 18 and under, I believe you have to wait 6 months to take the actual behind the wheel test. IF you are 18 and older, you can take the behind the wheel test anytime you are ready. This applies in California..I am not sure about what other states do, but i believe it is the same.

Thanks! I checked DMV from my state (NJ) and I found out that when you'r e older than 17 but younger than 21 you have to get probatory license. With this probatory license you have to practice unsupervised driving for a least a year before obtaining the basic drivers license.

This probatory license has these restrictions:

  • Display a reflectorized decal on each license plate (front/back); decals available at motor vehicle agencies, $4 per pair
  • No driving after 11:01 p.m. and before 5:00 a.m.
  • Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependant(s) are allowed as passengers. A dependant is a permit or probationary driver's child, not siblings
  • Only one additional passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hands-free interactive, wireless communication device

If im under 18 trying to get state id will my parents be affected if they sign a parental consent form ?

You should check on the DMV website what the requirements are for ID's in your state for minors. Call them and see if your parents must be present. I don't think they will be affected but they might require your parents to have valid state ID to sign for yours. Every state is different. Best wishes.

iowa

like RR said, some states require that you provide your parents DL numbers and also some states have special applications for non-citizens who have legal presence like KY does.

So since I live in texas and older than 18, to apply for a state id, all I would have to do is pay the fee, bring my SS number and take my EAD? Nothing else...

I think you will need your EAD, maybe the approval letter for your I-821D to prove Lawful Presence if the EAD alone isn't enough, 2 documents to prove Texas Residency, and your SSN.

Here are the documents that can be used to prove Texas Residency.

Any of the following documents will be accepted to verify an individual’s Texas residency. The two documents provided must be issued by different companies or agencies. For example, an individual may not use a water bill and an electricity bill from the same company.

  • Current deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement, mortgage payment booklet or a residential rental/lease agreement
  • Valid, unexpired Texas voter registration card
  • Texas motor vehicle registration or title
  • Texas boat registration or title
  • Texas concealed handgun license
  • Utility statement (including electric, water, natural gas, satellite TV, cable TV or noncellular phone bill) dated within 90 days of the date of application
  • Selective Service card
  • Medical or health card
  • Current homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy or homeowner’s or renter’s insurance statement
  • Current automobile insurance policy or an automobile insurance statement
  • Texas high school, college or university report card or transcript for the current school year
  • W-2 or 1099 tax form from the current tax year
  • Mail from financial institutions; including checking, savings, investment account and credit card statements dated within 90 days of the date of application
  • Mail from a federal, state, county or city government agency dated within 90 days of the date of application
  • Current automobile payment booklet
  • Pre-printed paycheck or payment stub dated within 90 days of the date of application
  • Current documents issued by the U.S. military indicating residence address
  • Document from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice indicating the applicant's recent release or parole
  • Current Form DS2019, I-20 or a document issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
